We strive to use two complete loaves of bread for each of the three <em>Seudos<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0on Shabbos. It is not uncommon, especially for those fortunate enough to have homemade <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Challa<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, that the loaves may be heavy and sag somewhat. Does this impinge on their status as \u201cwhole\u201d?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I did not find any <em>Sefer<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> that directly addresses this issue, but here are my thoughts on the matter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A little background. While it is always preferable to make a <em>Beracha<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0on a complete item, it is especially critical to the Mitzva of <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Lechem Mishna<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0for Shabbos\u00a0and Yom\u00a0Tov to use a whole loaf of bread. Therefore, while during the week one should make an incision in the loaf before the <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Beracha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, to indicate the location he intends to slice, on Shabbos this should be minimized (whether this <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Halacha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> applies at all to our <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Challos<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> today is a separate issue). Even on a weekday, the maximum permissible incision to preserve the \u201cwhole\u201d status of the loaf requires one to be capable of lifting the entire bread when gripping the prospective piece. This would seem to indicate that our sagging loaves may not be considered \u201ccomplete\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">The question is, is this a general rule that an object is incomplete if any section of it is incapable of supporting the weight of the entire item?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I would tend to be inclined that it is not. I suspect that this <em>Halacha<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> is specific to a situation where a break or separation has commenced, and it merely quantifies the maximum size considered attached. However, when the loaf is intact but merely weak, that infirmity does not deny it from wholeness.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was recently asked an interesting question.
