In Devarim\u00a018:10-11 we are enjoined to avoid various methods of divination, and Pasuk\u00a013 concludes the Aliya\u00a0that we should be \u201csimple\u201d with Hashem. Rashi on Pasuk\u00a013 explains the \u201csimplicity,\u201d that we should desist from attempting to predict the future, and instead accept whatever Hashem sends us.<\/p>\n
However, the following Pesukim\u00a0state that the Cana\u2019anim erred in relying on illegitimate methods of divining the future, while Bnei\u00a0Yisroel have Nevi\u2019im and the Urim v\u2019Tumim to assist them.<\/p>\n
The question that troubles me is, \u201cIs there something intrinsically wrong with wishing to know what the future holds, or is the problem only with using inappropriate methods?\u201d The conclusion of the fourth Aliya would imply the former, while the beginning of the fifth would seem to imply the latter.<\/p>\n
